An excellent edition to your diet during healthy pregnancy are herbal teas. They do not contain any caffeine, which is great, because the consumption of caffeine isn't part of eating healthy during pregnancy.
Caffeine does cross the placenta and your baby cannot metabolize caffeine like an adult. The least amount of caffeine comsumed, the better. Remember, most colas and soft drinks now contain caffeine - so read the labels!
Herbal teas can also be used as "medicinal" remedies, which is great again, as you shouldn't take any prescription or non-prescription medications when you are pregnant. A big part of eating healthy during pregnancy is what you drink, as you need to keep yourself adequately hydrated.
As a number of herbs are not safe during pregnancy, then it makes sense that some herbal teas made out of those herbs are also not safe. Rather than go through the list of what you can't drink, it's easier to list what you can:
Teas that are Safe to Drink during Pregnancy
The following teas are safe to drink during your entire pregnancy:
ALFALFA - contains Vitamins A, D, E and K. Especially good in later pregnancy to boost Vitamin K, which helps your blood to clot, prevent ing hemorraging during or after delivery.
CHAMOMILE - High in magnesium and calcium, this tea helps with sleeplessmess and inflammation of the joints.
DANDELION - High in calcium, Vitamin A and iron. Can help relieve mild edema (swelling) and nourish the liver.Do not make it yourself from dandelion leaves you pick from your yard. It may contain pesticides,which is harmful as part of your diet during healthy pregnancy.
GINGER - Helps to relieve nausea and vomiting,which is good for morning sickness. Fresh ginger purchased from the grocery store may be used to make tea and used in cooking.
LEMON BALM - Helps relieve irritability as it has a calming effect.
PEPPERMINT LEAF - Good for the digestion, it helps relieve nausea and flatulence. Good for morning sickness.
Tea that is Safe during your Second and Third Trimester
RED RASPBERRY LEAF - Helps tone the uterus, increase milk production, decrease nausea, is iron-rich and helps ease labor pains.
Red Raspberry is considered to be very good as part of your diet during healthy pregnancy. Many professionals and midwives believe regular consumption of this tea may help prevent pre-eclampsia, preterm labor, prolonged labor and postpartum (after delivery) hemorrhage (bleeding).
